With over 1,700 completed projects, 100+ years of combined team experience, and licenses in all 50 states, the firm partners with architects, developers, and contractors on projects including retail, hospitality, healthcare, education, laboratories, multifamily residential, office buildings, and public infrastructure.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical & Plumbing Engineer to lead the design and delivery of HVAC and plumbing systems across a diverse portfolio of commercial, institutional, and mixed-use projects. This role combines hands-on technical design with project leadership, client interaction, and mentorship of junior engineers.
The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in mechanical and plumbing system design, a thorough understanding of applicable codes and standards, and a proven track record of delivering high-quality construction documents on schedule.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead the design of HVAC systems, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, for commercial and institutional buildings
- Lead the design of plumbing systems, including:
- Domestic water
- Sanitary / waste systems
- Storm drainage
- Natural gas
- Fire protection interfaces
- Develop engineering calculations, load analyses, equipment selections, and system layouts using industry-standard design software
- Produce and review construction documents, specifications, and design narratives for accuracy, constructability, and code compliance
- Serve as a technical lead and primary point of contact for clients, architects, and contractors throughout the project lifecycle
- Support projects from conceptual design through construction administration
- Respond to RFIs and review shop drawings and submittals
- Support field coordination and conduct site visits as needed
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level engineers and designers
- Collaborate with electrical, fire safety, and other consulting teams to deliver fully coordinated MEP solutions
- Ensure designs comply with applicable building and energy codes, including IMC, IPC, CMC, CPC, ASHRAE 90.1 / 62.1, Title 24, and local AHJ requirements
- Support due diligence, value engineering, and feasibility studies for prospective projects
- Assist with proposal development, scope definition, and fee estimating for new projects
- Manage project scope, schedules, and deliverables
- Maintain quality control standards and contribute to the continuous improvement of internal design processes and templates
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field
- 8+ years of progressive experience in mechanical and plumbing design for commercial and/or institutional buildings
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Mechanical Engineering, or the ability to obtain California licensure within a defined timeframe
- Proficiency with mechanical and plumbing design and modeling software, such as AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Trane TRACE, Carrier HAP, or equivalent
- Strong working knowledge of applicable building and engineering codes and standards
- Demonstrated experience managing project scope, schedules, and deliverables
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience presenting and communicating with clients, architects, contractors, and design teams
- Experience designing across a variety of building types, including retail, hospitality, healthcare, laboratories, multifamily, and education is preferred
- Familiarity with BIM coordination workflows and clash detection processes is preferred
- LEED accreditation or experience with sustainable and energy-efficient design is preferred
- Previous experience mentoring or managing junior engineering staff is preferred
