Summary

We are seeking an experienced Underground Estimator to join a well-established heavy civil construction team based in Long Beach, CA. This role will support a strong pipeline of street paving and underground utility projects across Los Angeles County, including city streets, parking lots, and occasional airport and railway work.

This is a key hire due to an upcoming retirement, offering long-term stability and the opportunity to step into a high-impact role within a growing operation managing approximately $100M in annual work.

Duties & Responsibilities

Estimating & Preconstruction

  • Prepare accurate cost estimates for underground utility and paving projects
  • Review plans, specifications, and project scope to identify risks and opportunities
  • Develop detailed takeoffs for sewer, underground utilities, asphalt, and concrete work
  • Analyze labor, equipment, and material costs to ensure competitive and profitable bids

Project Evaluation & Strategy

  • Evaluate project feasibility and alignment with company capabilities
  • Collaborate with internal teams to develop bid strategies and pricing approaches
  • Support value engineering efforts to optimize cost efficiency

Coordination & Communication

  • Work closely with operations, project managers, and field teams
  • Communicate with subcontractors and vendors to obtain pricing and scope clarification
  • Assist in bid reviews and presentations as needed

Process & Performance

  • Maintain organized documentation of estimates and bid history
  • Continuously improve estimating accuracy and efficiency
  • Ensure all work aligns with company standards and project requirements

Qualifications & Requirements

Required

  • Proven experience as an Estimator in Heavy Civil Construction
  • Strong background in underground utilities (sewer, wet utilities, etc.)
  • Experience with asphalt and concrete paving projects
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and team collaboration abilities
  • Must be a strong cultural fit and team-oriented
